Why Buy Boss From an Authorized Dealer

Roland warrants a Boss product to the first buyer, bought from an authorized Roland dealer in the U.S., against defects in materials and workmanship. Boss compact pedals carry five years on parts and two on labor, and have since April 1, 2014; most other Boss products bought after January 1, 2023 carry two years. Registration is optional, but keep the receipt: a warranty claim ships to Roland with proof of purchase. The chart and the terms are on Roland's service and warranty page.

The Drives

Four ways to push an amp, all on the same-sized box. The DS-1 is distortion, hard-edged, the attack clear at full gain, on the same circuit since 1978. The SD-1 is overdrive, asymmetrical clipping that sounds like a driven tube amp, a focused midrange and a tight low end. The BD-2W Blues Driver responds to the pick and the volume knob the way an amp does, from a clean push to a rough crunch, on an all-discrete analog circuit. The MT-2 Metal Zone has the widest EQ of the four, a three-band active EQ with a sweepable mid and two gain stages. The DS-2 Turbo, the FZ-5 fuzz and the HM-2W are on the wall beside them.

Delay, Echo and Reverb

The DM-2W is the analog delay: bucket-brigade repeats that darken as they fade, 20 to 300 ms in Standard mode and up to 800 in Custom. The DD-8 is the most delay in a compact: eleven modes, ten seconds, tap tempo, carryover and a 40-second looper. The RE-2 is the Roland RE-201 tape echo of 1974 with its spring reverb, in a pedal. The DD-3T is the plain digital delay with tap tempo. The RV-6 covers eight reverbs in stereo, room, hall, plate, spring, modulate, delay, shimmer and dynamic.

Modulation, Pitch and Synth

The CE-2W is the analog chorus reissue with a CE-1 mode; the CH-1 is the Super Chorus; the DC-2W is the Dimension C; the BF-3 flanger, the TR-2 tremolo and the SL-2 slicer round out the modulation. The OC-5 tracks chords an octave down with no latency, the XS-100 Poly Shifter is a whammy, a capo and a drop-tuner in one, and the SY-1 is a guitar synth that needs no special pickup. The CS-3 compressor and the TU-3 tuners are the utility shelf.

The Katana-50 Gen 3

The Katana-50 is the Boss amp on the wall: 50 watts, Class AB, one 12-inch speaker, six amp characters, five effect sections, and a power control that gives the same sound at half a watt as at fifty, which is why one amp does the bedroom and the stage. Gen 3 refines the Tube Logic response and adds a Pushed character for edge-of-breakup playing.

Powering Them

Every Boss compact on the wall except the adapter-powered TU-3S runs on a 9-volt battery or Boss's PSA adapter, sold separately, and the current draw decides which one you'll want: the DS-1 and SD-1 sip 10 mA and last on a battery, the DD-8 pulls 100 mA and the RV-6 95 mA, which is adapter territory. A board of them wants one supply with isolated outputs; we stock MXR's Iso-Brick and Mini Iso-Brick for that, and the DC Brick, which is not isolated, for an all-analog board. The TU-3's DC out can power up to seven Boss compacts from one adapter through the optional PCS-20A cable.

It's a converted 1902 shirt mill that's become a hub for artists, makers, craftspeople, and independent businesses. Painters, photographers, woodworkers, jewelers, and now a guitar shop. The TU-3W tuner is the Waza Craft version of the TU-3, with a switch for buffered or true bypass.
