Guitar Setups in Glens Falls, NY
A guitar setup isn't a repair, and it isn't just a cleaning. It's a series of measurements and adjustments that get the neck, action, intonation, and hardware working together properly.
At our shop in Glens Falls, we set up everything from first guitars and everyday workhorses to vintage and higher-end instruments.
Neck Relief
A guitar neck usually shouldn't be perfectly straight. It needs a small amount of forward bow, called relief, so the strings have room to vibrate.
Too much relief can make the strings feel unnecessarily high through the middle of the neck. Too little can contribute to fret buzz.
Relief is measured and adjusted with the truss rod, taking the player's string gauge, tuning, playing style, fret condition, and desired action into account.
Action
Action is the height of the strings above the frets.
If it's too high, the guitar takes more effort to play and notes can be pulled sharp when fretted. If it's too low for the instrument or the player, buzzing can become a problem.
During a setup, we check action across the neck along with nut-slot height and bridge or saddle height. The goal isn't simply to make the strings as low as possible. It's to get the guitar playing comfortably while still working properly for the way it's actually being played.
Nut Slots
The nut has a bigger effect on playability and tuning than a lot of players realize.
If a string binds in its slot, tuning can jump or drift when you tune, bend strings, or use a tremolo. If the slots sit too high, chords near the nut can feel stiff and may pull sharp.
During a setup, the nut is checked for slot height, binding, wear, and general condition. Slots are cleaned and lubricated where appropriate. If the nut itself needs more substantial correction or replacement, we'll explain that before doing additional work.

Intonation
Intonation is how accurately the guitar plays in tune as you move up the neck.
A guitar can be perfectly tuned on the open strings and still play noticeably sharp or flat higher up.
On most electric guitars, intonation is adjusted by moving the individual bridge saddles forward or backward.
Acoustic guitars usually don't have individually adjustable saddles. If an acoustic has a significant intonation problem, correcting it may involve saddle compensation or other work beyond a normal setup.
General Inspection
Before and during a setup, we also look over the rest of the instrument. That includes things like:
- fret condition
- tuners
- nut and saddle condition
- bridge hardware
- electronics
- obvious structural or mechanical problems
Sometimes what looks like a setup problem turns out to be something else: uneven frets, a badly cut nut, worn hardware, a slipping tuner, or another issue that adjustment alone won't fix.
If we find something that needs work beyond the setup, we'll tell you what we found and what it would cost before proceeding.
What a Setup Doesn't Include
A standard setup does not automatically include a fret level, nut replacement, electronics repair, structural repair, or other additional bench work.
If the guitar needs something beyond the setup, that work is quoted separately and approved before we do it.

How Often Does a Guitar Need a Setup?
There isn't one schedule that applies to every guitar.
Some instruments stay stable for a long time. Others move noticeably with changes in humidity, temperature, string gauge, tuning, or playing style.
Here in Glens Falls and the surrounding Capital Region and Adirondacks, the seasonal swing between humid summers and dry heated winters can noticeably change neck relief and action.
We see the same thing on guitars coming in from Queensbury, Lake George, Saratoga Springs, and throughout the region.
Every winter, guitars that were playing perfectly well a few months earlier show up with noticeably different relief or action after spending weeks in a dry heated house.
A guitar that played perfectly in August may feel very different by January.
If the action has changed, the guitar is buzzing, tuning feels unstable, or it simply doesn't play the way it used to, it's worth having it checked.

Standard setup: $79
Deluxe setup: $109
Specialty setup: $99
The deluxe is the one we usually recommend. It covers everything in the standard setup plus headstock-to-strap-button detailing, all hardware tightened and lubricated, and the fretboard cleaned and conditioned. Specialty covers locking tremolo, 12-string, and classical. Every setup includes nut-slot filing, and strings are extra.
Turnaround depends on the current bench workload. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when you bring the guitar in.

Guitar Setup FAQ
Does a new guitar need a setup?
Sometimes. Some new guitars arrive playing very well, while others benefit considerably from a setup. Shipping, seasonal changes, string gauge, tuning, playing style, and personal preference can all affect how a new guitar feels.
Can Upstate New York weather affect my guitar?
Yes. Changes in temperature and especially humidity can move the neck and change relief and action. Dry heated winters are a common time for guitars around Glens Falls to need adjustment.
What's the difference between a setup and a repair?
A setup adjusts the instrument so it plays properly. Repairs and additional bench work address things a normal setup can't correct, such as electronics problems, fretwork, nut replacement, damaged hardware, or structural issues.
How much does a guitar setup cost?
A standard setup at Paul's Guitar Hideout is $79. The deluxe setup, which is the one we usually recommend, is $109. Specialty setups such as Floyd Rose, 12-string, and classical guitars are $99. Strings are extra.
