Lessons for Adults: Is It Too Late?

The question almost every adult asks on the way in. No, it's not. People start guitar at thirty, at fifty, at seventy. Some of the most inspired students we see are adults who finally decided to do the thing they've been thinking about for twenty years. Starting as an adult is different from starting as someone younger, but different isn't worse. Adults are more patient, more focused, and usually know what they actually want to play. Adult beginners learn the fundamentals while getting to actual music as quickly as possible. You don't have to spend months studying theory before you're allowed to play a song.

For returning and experienced players, lessons can focus on whatever has been getting in the way: technique, timing, fretboard knowledge, rhythm, phrasing, songwriting, improvisation, or parts of the instrument that never quite clicked.

How Lessons Work

Travis listens to what you want and builds a plan for it. He'll work on the songs you actually want to play, the foundation underneath them, technique, riffs, songwriting, or getting ready to perform, whatever the goal is.

Lessons are 30 or 60 minutes. For most beginners, 30 minutes is the right starting point: it's enough time to cover real ground without hitting the point where you stop retaining. As you progress and have more to work on, 60 minutes makes more sense. Travis will tell you what he recommends after the first session. What You'll Actually Learn

Lessons start with the music you want to play and work backward from there.

That might mean getting a chord change clean, tightening your timing, understanding why a riff works, learning your way around the fretboard, working through a solo, or figuring out how to turn an idea into a song.

Technique, rhythm, chords, theory, phrasing, and ear training all have a place. The difference is that they're connected to something you're actually trying to do.

You're not learning something just because it happens to be next in a book.

Your Guitar Matters Too

Learning is harder than it needs to be when the instrument itself is fighting you.

Strings that sit unnecessarily high, unstable tuning, an uncomfortable neck, or a guitar that simply isn't a good physical fit can make a beginner assume the problem is their playing.

If your guitar isn't playing properly, we'll tell you. A professional setup can sometimes make a substantial difference.

A: Come in. Travis will figure out what you remember, what you don't, and build from there. For returning players, lessons fill in the gaps, and the first session is about where you're starting and where you want to go.

Q: Do I really need lessons, or can I learn from YouTube?
A: You can learn a lot from YouTube. A teacher catches bad habits before they set, and bad fretting-hand technique is much harder to fix later than to prevent now. A few lessons at the start to get the foundation right are worth it even if you plan to mostly teach yourself after.

Q: How long until I can play something?
A: By the end of the first month, most adult beginners who stick with it have a handful of chords, some transitions, and a sense of how the instrument works. Q: How often do I need to practice?
A: Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours once a week.

Q: Should I start on acoustic or electric?
