Guitar lessons for kids in the Glens Falls area, taught by Travis Gray — a working musician who's played Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Mountain Jam.
Do We Teach Kids?
Travis Gray teaches kids at Paul's Guitar Hideout. Travis grew up playing with Paul, has performed at Bonnaroo, SXSW, and Mountain Jam, and teaches because he genuinely wants to — not because it's a job between gigs. Your kid is learning from someone who actually plays at that level.
What Age Can Kids Start?
Around 8 is the realistic starting point. Younger than that, hand size and focus make it harder to build real habits. If you're not sure whether your child is ready, bring them in — we'll give you a straight answer.
What Kids Learn
Travis focuses on building real fundamentals from the start — proper technique, how to hold the instrument, basic chords, and songs the kid actually wants to play. Theory comes later, once they're comfortable. The goal is to keep them engaged long enough for it to click.
What Parents Usually Ask
- What does my kid need before the first lesson? — A guitar that's set up and playable. A guitar with high action is harder to play and will slow progress. We can help you find the right instrument and make sure it's ready.
- How much should they practice? — 15–20 minutes a day is more effective than an hour on weekends. Consistency matters more than duration at this age.
- How do I maintain the guitar? — Wipe it down after playing, keep it in a case, and bring it in if something feels off. We'll show you what to look for.
What Makes a Good First Guitar for a Kid
Size matters. A full-size guitar is too big for most kids under 10 — a 3/4 size acoustic or a short-scale electric is easier to hold and play. The guitar also needs to be set up properly. A hard-to-play guitar will end lessons faster than anything else. Browse our beginner guitar inventory or bring them in and we'll help you find the right fit.
