An Ibanez Roadster II came in cutting out, in for a setup and a string change from 8s to 10s.
What Came In
An Ibanez Roadster II. It was cutting out, and the owner wanted it set up and moved from 8s up to 10s.
What We Found
The pots, switch, and jack were all corroded and dusty and needed cleaning. Going up two gauge steps to 10s meant resetting the tremolo springs, truss rod, saddle height, and intonation, and adjusting the pickups to suit.
What We Did
Pulled the pickguard to clean out the electronics. Restrung with 10s and tightened the tremolo springs to match, then set the truss rod, saddle height, and intonation for the new strings. Finished by setting the pickup height. About an hour and ten minutes on the bench.
Result
A big jump from 8s to 10s, and it played great with everything cleaned up.
Worth Knowing
Going from 8s to 10s is a large tension change, and on a guitar with a floating tremolo the springs have to come up to match or the bridge angle and tuning go off.
Corroded electronics that cut out are usually just dirty, and a proper cleaning brings them back more often than people expect.
