Q&A
What is a tool you would not lend to anyone?
I would never lend anyone my hammer. Because when the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And if everything looks like a nail and I still have my hammer I should be fine.
What is a problem you see on almost every guitar that comes in?
Almost every guitar that comes in has the truss rod incorrectly adjusted. Whether it's too much neck relief or too little relief, it's always a relief when I can adjust the relief correctly.
What do you check on every guitar without thinking about it?
I check the neck relief on every guitar without thinking about it. The truss rod relief is almost always adjusted incorrectly, but it's a relief when I don't have to adjust it.
What do you listen to while you work?
At work I listen to the sounds of truss rods turning, intonation being dialed in, fret buzz going away, and the Phish. Lots of the Phish.
Which guitar felt right the moment you touched it?
I once played a guitar that felt right from the moment I touched it. The truss rod relief was perfectly adjusted. Intonation was spot on. Action was really low but not too low. Everything about it was just right. Unfortunately I don't recall which guitar that was. So I'm always buying more trying to find that one again.
What is a tool you have owned for a long time?
My hammer. I've never let anyone borrow it.
What is the smallest screw you have ever lost?
The smallest screw I have ever lost was two hundred and seventeen thousandths of an inch by eighty one thousandths of an inch. It was really hard to find a replacement — not because it was so small, but because it's hard to find sources for small screws.
Which part of a guitar is the most beautiful to you?
The most beautiful part of a guitar to me is the inside of the sound hole on an acoustic guitar. I always imagine myself shrunk down to be small enough where the inside of the acoustic guitar is my roomy apartment with a great, albeit not very rainproof, skylight. I picture myself playing an acoustic guitar inside of my acoustic guitar apartment and then I think of how small the apartment must be in the acoustic guitar I'm playing.
What do people assume is complicated but isn't?
Most people assume that trigonometry is complicated. But by simply following the rules set forth by SOHCAHTOA you'll be mastering the relationships between angles and sides in triangles in no time.
What is your favorite food?
Tacos.
What is something you learned by making a mistake?
I learned that it's a mistake to try to get a car with a manual transmission moving in 5th gear instead of 1st. I promised my friend I could do it, on his car of course, and I did it. But also burnt out his clutch so it ended up being a mistake.
How do you know when a job is finished?
I know a job is finished when I strum the guitar and it doesn't strum back. Nobody wants their guitar strumming back at them.
What is the difference between something working and something being right?
I don't even know what this question is asking.
What is the most reliable thing you own?
My hammer. Life sends you a lot of nails when all that you have is a hammer and my hammer has never let me down.
What is the last thing you do before you call a job done?
I strum the song Ruben James — the Kingston Trio version. If the guitar sounds good playing that song I know it'll sound good playing anything.
