Favorite Gear Right Now
I've had a Les Paul for years now and it never clicked with me. One day I saw it and the shame of letting it sit there got me to pick it up and I can't put it back down again.
Q&A
What was the first guitar you ever saw that you actually wanted?
Gibson SG Standard in cherry — with the full pickguard.
What is a chord voicing you keep coming back to?
The 1st position C shape, anywhere except the 1st position.
What is the first thing you do when you pick up a guitar?
Tune. Then tune again.
What is a record you have worn out?
Abbey Road.
What is something you carry in your pocket just in case?
Earplugs.
What is a sound you have been trying to get right for a long time?
The incredible lead tone at the end of Daylight — the last track on Fantastic Planet by Failure.
What is a record you have used as a reference point more than once?
The Long Road by Nickelback.
What is the last thing you adjusted on your own gear?
My guitar strap was a little loose. Gotta keep 'em high and tight.
What is a song that makes you want to keep practicing?
Any time I hear Lindsey Buckingham on anything my hands feel like oven mitts. Makes me run to the nearest guitar.
What is something about your playing that hasn't changed since you started?
Every time I pick up and play there is something new and exciting to discover.
What is something you don't bother trying to fix yourself?
Any electronics. That's for the nerds.
What is your favorite food?
Potato salad — the kind at a backyard BBQ. Can't get enough of it.
What is a guitar part you wish you had written?
It's simple but I absolutely love the verses of Whatsername by Green Day. Gets me every time.
What is the last thing you changed your mind about?
Plugins are good but hardware is better. The magic really is all about capturing a great sound at the source.
What is something you're still figuring out?
How to git gud.
