Width is the thing worth thinking about if you play standing for more than half an hour. A two-inch strap concentrates the weight; a wider one spreads it, which matters a lot on a heavy Les Paul or a bass and not at all on a parlor acoustic.
Strap locks are the other cheap insurance. Most of the instruments that come to the bench with a cracked headstock hit the floor because a strap button let go.
