They both have their thing.
What is something you own that is older than this building?
My soul.
How many keys are on your shop key ring?
I have a comical amount of keys. Looking just now, there's a few I have no idea what they go to.
What is something you own that you would not sell?
My Les Paul Studio that I've had since 2004.
What is the first thing you do when you unlock the place?
Get some tunes cooking and make a coffee.
What is a song that sounds like Glens Falls in the winter?
"Our Prayer" by The Beach Boys.
What is your favorite food?
I have a tenuous relationship with food. It would be easier to say what I don't like. Peeps and candy corn can frig off.
What was the last show you went to?
The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie.
What is the last record that actually stopped you?
I always find new things to fall in love with. I can't stop listening to the score for Fire Walk with Me by Angelo Badalamenti. Phoebe Bridgers and Sleep Token are newish obsessions.
What is a piece of gear in the shop you secretly want to keep?
I make an effort to avoid this. All of it!
What is the strangest thing you have found inside a guitar?
If I answer this truthfully I might be putting myself in legal jeopardy.
What is something you had to learn the hard way running this place?
Patience with myself. It's okay to not be perfect.
Do you notice a difference between wood types?
With acoustics, yes.
What do you do when the shop is empty?
Catch up on work. Reflect on my gratitude.
If the Hideout had a house band, who is in it?
Travie G on guitar and vocals. Jerry P on electric guitar. Adam Brown and Andy Frasier on dueling basses. Mark "Stache" Morrissey on the skins. Me in a sequin jumpsuit on acoustic. The band would be called PURPLE HELL YEAH. Oh, and I forgot keys. Someone who is a good hang, tickling the ivories.
What was your first guitar?
A Fernandes Retro Rocket. I got it in 2001 with the first paycheck I ever earned.
What is the first song you ever learned all the way through?
"Glycerine" by Bush. I learned it by ear in 1998, on the guitar my brother would leave at the house. I would perform to the other kids in the neighborhood on the back deck. It was all I did from then on.
What is the guitar that got away?
Damn, this hurts to think about. It's a tie: a stunning example of a '70 EB-3, and a '77 Tele with all new hardware and fancy USA pickups on a beautiful ash body. Looked like the Boss's Tele.
Where did the name "Hideout" come from?
It just kinda came to me. Newbury Comics and Norm's Rare Guitars are my favorite stores. The whimsy in "Newbury Comics" feels like an analogy for the joy I see people feel there. I call Newbury Comics "joy dealers." I want people to feel that way when they're in my shop. The "Paul's" is a tribute to Norm putting his own name on his shop, a guy who started out with an apartment stacked to the ceiling with guitars. They changed the game forever, in all the right ways.
