Clip-On or Pedal

A clip-on reads the vibration of the headstock through a sensor, not a microphone, so it works in a loud room, and it goes in the case: the Fender FT-1 Pro at $24.99 is the plain one, the D'Addario Eclipse recharges over USB-C for about 24 hours of tuning per charge, and the Fender Flash 2.0 recharges too and adds a color display on two swivels that reads from either side of the headstock. A pedal tuner sits on the board and mutes the signal while you tune: the Boss TU-3 is the stage standard, the TU-3S is the same tuner without the footswitch for a board where it stays on, and the TU-3W is the Waza Craft version with a switch for buffered or true bypass.

Tuning and Intonation

A tuner can't fix intonation: if the fretted note at the twelfth fret reads sharp or flat against the open string, the saddle is the fix. On an electric that's part of a standard setup, $79, strings extra, and intonation is checked on every one; on an acoustic it can be saddle work beyond a setup. If the guitar won't stay in tune at all, it's usually the nut or the tuning machines before it's the tuner. Service is first come, first served.
