Guitar Repair in Glens Falls, NY

Paul's Guitar Hideout repairs guitars and basses at 71 Lawrence St. in downtown Glens Falls, inside The Shirt Factory: fret work, electronics and pickups, nut and saddle work, tuners and structural repair, plus setups. Most common repair work has a set price, listed on repair and setup pricing. Bring it in Wednesday–Sunday, 12–5 PM, and no appointment is needed. Service is first come, first served. Look magazine called Glens Falls "Hometown U.S.A." back in 1944, and the downtown still runs on that: a walkable main street, the Hyde, Harding Mazzotti Arena, and now a guitar shop on the second floor of the old shirt mill on Lawrence Street. If you're already downtown, we're about a ten-minute walk from Glen Street.

What We Repair

Dave Eastwood, our repair tech, handles the repairs and setups at the shop. The work covers fret leveling and dressing, refrets, nut and saddle work, tuner replacement, electronics (pickup swaps, wiring, pot replacement and output jack repair), bridge reglues on acoustics, and crack repair.

We diagnose with you present, explain what we see and give you a number before any work starts. If we find something during the work that changes the scope, you hear about it before we keep going. An electronics repair starts with reproducing the problem, not ordering parts, and electronics diagnosis is $69 an hour with a half-hour minimum, applied to the job if you go ahead.

What Repairs Cost

These prices are as of September 24, 2026. The current list is on repair and setup pricing. Strings and parts are always extra, and you're welcome to bring your own. Any job that needs the strings off includes the restring labor. If a job will run more than the quote, we reach out before doing it.

  • Fret work: An edge dress is $219 and a full level is $299, and both include a deluxe setup. A fret polish is $79. For more on whether yours needs one, read how to know if a guitar needs a fret level.
  • Refrets: A refret starts at $499 and includes a deluxe setup. Binding, stainless frets and a new bone nut are priced as add-ons on the pricing page.
  • Nut and saddle: A nut or a saddle is $179, or $249 for both, in hand-whittled bone fit to your instrument, with a deluxe setup included.
  • Electronics: Diagnosis and troubleshooting is $69 an hour with a half-hour minimum, applied to the job. An output jack repair is $39 plus parts.
  • Pickups and tuners: Installing one electric pickup is $69, and installing a whole set of tuners is $69. The parts themselves aren't included.
  • Structural: Crack repair starts at $79. A bridge reglue is $299 and a dovetail neck reset is $699 with a new bone saddle, both with a deluxe setup included. Broken headstocks and bolt-on neck resets are quoted at the bench.

Setups

A standard setup is $79. Deluxe is $109 and is the one we usually recommend. Specialty (Floyd Rose, 12-string, classical) is $99. A setup covers the truss rod, the action at the nut and saddle, and the intonation. Every setup includes nut-slot filing when it's needed and the restring labor, and strings are extra. From the Bench: Fender Japanese Telecaster, Setup and an Electronics Cleaning

What came in: A Japanese Fender Telecaster, in for a setup. What we found: The electronics needed cleaning. What we did: Removed the control cover and sprayed out the electronics. Two bigger jobs are in the Repair Vault too. A Fender Telecaster that buzzed up and down the neck had uneven frets with divots worn into them, so it got a fret grind, level and polish and then a setup with 9s: Fender Telecaster: Fret Level and Polish for Divoted Frets. A Seagull dreadnought had two loose braces, one of them cracked, and a crack in the bridge, so the braces were reattached, the cracked brace and the bridge were repaired, and a battery box went into the side: Seagull Dreadnought: Loose Braces, a Cracked Bridge, and a Battery Box.

Why Acoustics Crack in Winter

Upstate New York winters are particularly hard on acoustics. Forced air heat in older buildings drops indoor humidity fast, and we see more cracked tops and lifting bridges come through the bench in January and February than any other time of year. Fender's 2011 acoustic guitar manual says cracks are typically caused by changes in temperature and humidity, usually higher temperatures and low humidity, and that a crack taken care of promptly "shouldn't be a cause for undue concern." If the crack is in the top near the bridge, the manual says to loosen all the strings to take the tension off. The background is in how humidity affects your guitar.

Where We Are

We're on the second floor of The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls. The building went up in 1902 as a men's shirt factory and made shirts until 1996. Today it's home to more than 70 studios, shops and galleries, and now a guitar shop. Use the Cooper Street entrance and take the stairs up. The easiest place to park is the Cooper Street lot.

Q: Can you fix an old guitar that's been sitting for years?
A: Sometimes. We diagnose at drop-off and tell you whether it's a clean repair, a bigger job, or not worth the work before anything starts.

Q: My acoustic developed a crack over the winter. Can you fix it?
