Guitar Setup Near Queensbury, NY

Paul's Guitar Hideout is in Glens Falls, ten minutes south of Queensbury on Route 9. A setup is regular maintenance, and most guitars need one once or twice a year to play their best. $79 standard, $109 deluxe, $99 specialty (Floyd Rose, 12-string, classical), strings extra. Queensbury wraps around Glens Falls on three sides, so for most of it we're closer than the mall. Route 9 at the Aviation Road light, past the mall, and you're at the Shirt Factory in about ten minutes.

Where We Are

We're on the second floor of The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls. The building went up in 1902 as a men's shirt factory and made shirts until 1996. Today it's home to more than 70 studios, shops and galleries, and now a guitar shop. Use the Cooper Street entrance and take the stairs up. If stairs are difficult or you're bringing in something you don't want to carry up, call or text us and we'll arrange access.

Queensbury is a suburb of Glens Falls and one of the last bastions of commerce and population before the Adirondacks.

What came in: A Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster in purple metallic with a maple neck. What we found: The saddles, intonation, tremolo springs and truss rod were all adjusted wrong. What we did: Adjusted the saddles, intonation, tremolo springs and truss rod back to spec, and filed the nut to even out the string heights. Result: Back in spec, and the new owner was happy with it. Routine Maintenance, Not an Event

The 10-minute drive from Queensbury puts a guitar setup in the same category as an oil change: not a special trip, just a thing you do periodically because the guitar plays better for it. Most guitars that come in haven't been set up since they were bought. Action is high, intonation is off, one fret has minor buzz. All of it is fixable with a setup. The Starter Guitar Problem

A beginner's first guitar that plays poorly usually just needs a $79 setup. New guitars come set to the manufacturer's factory spec. Depending on your playing style, you may want a setup that's different from that spec, and we can do it. A $79 setup is cheaper than buying a better guitar because the first one felt impossible. What a Setup Includes

Truss rod adjusted to correct relief. Nut slots checked and filed if high. Saddle action dialed to your preference. Intonation verified at the 12th fret. Fresh strings (9s or 10s on electric, light or medium on acoustic by default, or whatever you bring; strings are extra).

Standard, Deluxe, or Specialty

Standard at $79 covers most guitars. Deluxe at $109, the one we usually recommend, adds headstock-to-strap-button detailing, all hardware tightened and lubricated, and the fretboard cleaned and conditioned. $99 specialty applies to Floyd Rose and other double-locking tremolos, 12-strings, and classicals: all of which take meaningfully more setup time to dial properly. We'll identify the category at drop-off.

Cadence

For acoustics in this region: twice a year, spring and fall. For electrics: once a year unless you change gauges or tunings. For any guitar that hasn't been touched in two or three years: now, before a minor drift becomes a bigger issue.
