The FZ-1W is a 1960s-style fuzz that Boss designed new instead of copying one old pedal. It's all analog on silicon transistors, with Level, Tone and Fuzz knobs and a switch between Vintage and Modern modes.

Vintage mode is the raspy, aggressive one, and it follows your guitar's volume knob: roll it back and the fuzz drops to crunch and then to clean. Modern mode has more gain, a fatter sound and more midrange, and its Tone knob changes the brightness without moving the mids. With the Fuzz down and the Level up, it works as a boost into the amp or another drive pedal. Old fuzz pedals drift with temperature, age and battery; the silicon circuit holds its sound steady. The bypass is buffered.

New from Boss.

Who it's for: Guitarists after a 1960s-style fuzz that cleans up from the guitar's volume knob, with a second mode for fatter, higher-gain sounds.

Questions

Does it run on a battery?
Yes. It takes a 9V battery, and one comes in the box: about 33 hours on an alkaline. It also runs on a Boss PSA-series adaptor, sold separately, and draws 16 mA.

What does the V/M switch do?
V is Vintage mode: raspy, aggressive and very responsive to the guitar's volume knob. M is Modern mode: more gain, a fatter sound and more midrange. The Tone knob is tuned differently for each mode.

Is it true bypass?
No. Boss uses a buffer, so the signal stays clear when the pedal is off. It has one 1/4-inch input, one 1/4-inch output and a DC jack.
