The PH-3 is the Boss compact phaser with Rise and Fall modes, where the phase keeps climbing or keeps falling instead of sweeping up and back down. It has Rate, Depth and Resonance knobs, a seven-position Stage switch and tap tempo on the pedal switch.

The Stage switch also covers the standard phasers, 4, 8, 10 and 12-stage, with more stages giving a deeper effect, plus a Step mode that moves the filter in jumps instead of a smooth sweep. Hold the pedal switch for two seconds, then tap the tempo in with your foot. The EXP/CTL jack takes a Boss FS-5U footswitch for tapping, or an expression pedal like the EV-30 to change the rate as you play.

Questions

Does it run on a battery?
Yes. It takes a 9V alkaline battery, good for about six hours of continuous use by Boss's figure, or a Boss PSA series adaptor, sold separately. It draws 50 mA.

What does the Stage switch do?
It picks the phaser type: 4, 8, 10 or 12-stage, or the Fall, Rise and Step modes. The 12-stage setting is two six-stage phasers in series.

What plugs into the EXP/CTL jack?
A momentary footswitch such as the Boss FS-5U to tap the tempo, or an expression pedal (Boss EV-30, FV-500L, FV-500H or Roland EV-5) to change the rate with your foot. The bypass is buffered.
