Guitar Setup in the Adirondacks

Paul's Guitar Hideout is in Glens Falls, in the Adirondack foothills. $79 standard, $109 deluxe, $99 specialty (Floyd Rose, 12-string, classical). Drop off during shop hours, no appointment. Our repair work is documented publicly in the Repair Vault.

Glens Falls has called itself the Gateway to the Adirondacks for a century, and it still is: Exit 18 is the last real town before the park. Anyone coming down 87 from Schroon Lake, Chestertown, or North Creek passes us on the way to anything else.

The Drive

The Adirondacks start at the top of Queensbury: six million acres, the largest park in the contiguous United States, a hundred-odd towns and villages inside it, and Glens Falls is the city in the foothills at the bottom.

From Lake George about 10 minutes, Warrensburg about 20, Bolton Landing about 30, Chestertown about 30. I-87 Exit 18, then the Cooper Street lot at The Shirt Factory. Drop-off takes a few minutes. We look at the guitar with you and confirm standard or specialty.

What came in: A sunburst Squier Stratocaster with a black pickguard, in for a cleanup, a setup and an electronics check. What we found: The guitar was dirty and so were the electronics. What we did: Cleaned the guitar and the electronics and conditioned the fretboard. Result: Much cleaner, and it played nicely. Where We Are

We're on the second floor of The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls. The building went up in 1902 as a men's shirt factory and made shirts until 1996. Today it's home to more than 70 studios, shops and galleries, and now a guitar shop. Use the Cooper Street entrance and take the stairs up. If stairs are difficult or you're bringing in something you don't want to carry up, call or text us and we'll arrange access.

What a Setup Includes

Truss rod to correct relief. Nut slots checked and filed if high. Saddle action dialed to your preference. Intonation verified at the 12th fret. Fresh strings installed (strings are extra). For more on what a setup covers and why, read what a guitar setup includes and why it matters.

Service is first come, first served. Need it back by a certain date? Let us know at drop-off and we'll do our best to accommodate.

Standard, Deluxe, or Specialty

Standard, $79: Most electrics, most acoustics, most basses. Full setup; strings are extra.

Deluxe, $109: Everything in the standard plus headstock-to-strap-button detailing, all hardware tightened and lubricated, and the fretboard cleaned and conditioned. The one we usually recommend.

Specialty, $99: Floyd Rose and other double-locking tremolos, 12-strings, classicals. The extra covers the additional setup time these instruments need.
