Where We Are
We're on the second floor of The Shirt Factory in Glens Falls, one of the more interesting buildings in the region. It's a converted 19th century textile mill that's become a hub for artists, makers, craftspeople, and independent businesses. Painters, photographers, woodworkers, jewelers, and now a guitar shop. The building has a creative energy that fits what we do. Use the Cooper Street entrance and take the stairs up. If you need assistance, give us a call and we'll come down.
The Camp-Guitar Humidity Problem
Summer humidity at Lake George runs high. Wood swells, tops rise, action climbs. A Martin that played perfectly in May can feel stiff by August.
Winter is harder. Camps heated intermittently (weekends, holidays, a week in February) swing through humidity cycles every time the heat kicks on and off. Wood that swelled through summer contracts hard when heated indoor air drops humidity. Tops sink. Fret ends poke. Hairline cracks open along the grain. Martins, being built precisely, show this faster than other acoustics. More on the mechanism: how humidity affects your guitar.
Better to have a realistic plan going in than an unrealistic purchase.
What Actually Works for a Lake George Martin
Case-first storage. Out only when you're playing.
Active humidification through winter. Sponge-style case humidifier (Oasis, Planet Waves, similar). Hygrometer. Target 45–55% inside the case. Check weekly, refill weekly.
Interior storage if the camp has it. A closet off a heated room holds humidity better than an exterior-wall room.
Seasonal setups. Spring and fall. $79 standard setup. Catches issues before they become structural.
If that routine is more than you'll actually do, ask us about it before buying. Better to find out at intake than at the bench three winters later. The seasonal framework in full: the Adirondack guitar player's seasonal maintenance checklist.
What We Stock
Standard Series — D-18, D-28, 000-28, OM-28. Road Series at lower price points. Occasional 15 Series all-mahogany (slightly more tolerant of humidity swings). Call first if you're driving down for a specific model.
Used as an Alternative
For a lake-use Martin, a used one at used prices is often the smarter buy. The full Martin collection includes both new and used Martins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is it a bad idea to keep a Martin at a Lake George camp?
A: Not bad, but it requires real commitment. Active humidification, case storage, seasonal setups. Doable. Not optional.
Q: What should I budget?
A: New Standard Series roughly $2,500–$3,500. Road Series lower. Used Martins vary widely.
Q: I already have a Martin at the camp and haven't been humidifying it. Should I bring it in?
A: Yes. The earlier we catch humidity issues the cheaper the fix.
Q: Can you order a specific model?
A: Yes, usually 3–4 weeks direct from Nazareth.
Come play a few. Have the humidity conversation. Decide if this is the right call for where you'll keep the guitar.
