Description

The HD-28 is the herringbone D-28: bold herringbone top inlay, forward-shifted GE-scalloped X-bracing, the pre-war trim Martin dropped in 1944 and brought back in 1976. Those pre-war herringbones are the guitars bluegrass flatpicking was built on. Tony Rice's 1935, Jerry Garcia's 1943, and the pair of 1940s dreadnoughts Bryan Sutton records on are all that lineage. Spruce over East Indian rosewood, select hardwood neck with the GE Modified Low Oval profile, ebony fingerboard and bridge, 1-3/4" bone nut, 25.4" scale.

In the current Standard Series the HD-28 and the D-28 share the same forward-shifted GE-scalloped bracing, so what separates them is the trim and what it signals. The herringbone is the visual cue for pre-war spec to anyone who knows Martins, and it is the reason people ask for this one by name. The 1935 Sunburst finish ages into something that looks fifty years old after five.

Gloss 1935 Sunburst. New from Martin. Comes with the molded hardshell case.
