What Came In

A sunburst Gibson Les Paul, in for a setup. The action was buzzing and the electronics had gone scratchy.

What We Found

The action was low and buzzy and the intonation was off. The nut was uneven and so was the bridge. The electronics were scratchy.

What We Did

Cleaned the electronics. Adjusted the truss rod and the bridge height. Filed the nut even across the fretboard, set the pickup height, and strung it up with 10s. About 45 minutes on the bench.

Result

The buzzing is fixed.

Why does a buzz move around the neck?

When the nut and the bridge are both uneven, each string sits at its own height at both ends, so the buzz shows up in different places on different strings and chasing it one string at a time never lands. Leveling both ends is what settles the whole fretboard.
