Gibson Les Paul Tribute Gold Top: Buzzing D String, Uneven Nut and Saddles

Gibson Les Paul Tribute in gold top on the repair bench, two humbuckers and trapezoid inlays

A Gibson Les Paul Tribute in gold top came in for a setup with a buzz mostly on the D string, the intonation off, and the action uneven at both the bridge and the nut. Truss rod adjusted, nut and saddles evened out, intonation set, electronics cleaned. Forty minutes, and most of the buzz gone.

What Came In

A Gibson Les Paul Tribute in gold top, in for a setup.

What We Found

It buzzed, mostly on the D string. The intonation was off, and the action was uneven at both ends: the saddles and the nut.

What We Did

Adjusted the truss rod. Evened out the nut and evened out the saddles. Set the intonation and cleaned the electronics. About 40 minutes on the bench.

Result

The buzzing mostly went away after the setup, in Dave's words.

Why would a buzz stay on one string after a setup?

When it is one string, the cause is usually local to that string: its nut slot, its saddle, or a fret under it that sits a touch high. A setup that levels the nut and saddles takes care of most of it. If some remains, the frets are the next place to look, which is a separate job.
