They're related but different. A setup is routine maintenance. A repair fixes something that's broken or worn beyond adjustment. Most guitars need setups regularly. Repairs happen when something goes wrong. Most people come in not knowing which one they need.

Here's how to tell which one you're dealing with.

What a setup is

A setup is a set of adjustments made to bring a guitar to its optimal playing condition. Action, neck relief, nut slots, intonation. Nothing is broken — it just needs adjustment. A setup is something every guitar benefits from at least once a year. More detail on the What Does a Guitar Setup Actually Do? page. Wondering what it costs? See How Much Does a Guitar Setup Cost?

What a repair is

A repair addresses something that's damaged, broken, or worn out. A cracked headstock. A separated bridge. A fret that's worn down to the point where it buzzes no matter what. A broken tuner. Electronics that cut out. These aren't adjustment issues — they're physical problems that need to be fixed before the guitar can play properly. For timelines, see How Long Does a Guitar Repair Take?

Where it gets blurry

Some things sit in between. A nut that's too worn to hold proper string height needs to be replaced — that's a repair, not a setup. Frets that are too low to level properly need to be replaced — that's a refret, not a setup. A setup will catch these issues during inspection and flag them before any work is done.

Which one do you need?

If your guitar plays but doesn't play well — action feels off, tuning is unstable, intonation is out — that's usually a setup. If something is physically wrong — a crack, a break, something that doesn't function — that's a repair. If you're not sure, the Do I Need a Guitar Setup? page is a good starting point.
