It depends on what you're trying to do. Selling and trading are different transactions with different outcomes, and the right choice depends on your situation.

The goal is simple: get the most value out of a guitar you're no longer playing.

What selling means

When you sell a guitar, you get cash. That's it. You walk away with money and no obligation to spend it on another guitar. If you need the cash, or you're done with guitar entirely, selling is the right move.

The tradeoff is time and effort. Selling privately — through Marketplace, Craigslist, or Reverb — takes effort. You photograph it, list it, answer questions, deal with lowballers, arrange meetups, and hope the buyer shows up. It can take days or weeks.

Selling to a shop is faster. You bring it in, we look at it, we make an offer. If you accept, you leave with cash the same day. The offer will be less than private sale value — that's how it works everywhere — but the transaction is clean and immediate.

What trading means

When you trade, you're applying the value of your guitar toward something else in the shop. You don't get credit toward a different instrument or gear.

Trading makes sense when you already know what you want next. If you're moving from a beginner guitar to something better, or switching from acoustic to electric, a trade lets you make that move without coming up with full cash out of pocket.

Trade value is usually similar to what you'd get selling to a shop — sometimes slightly better, because the transaction is cleaner for both sides.

Which one is right for you

  • If you need cash → sell
  • If you want a different guitar → trade
  • If you want maximum money and have time → sell privately
  • If you want it done today → sell or trade to the shop
